The Holy Mysteries (Sacraments)
In the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church, the sacraments are called Holy Mysteries. They are sacred encounters with God through which His grace is revealed, received, and lived. Rooted in the ancient Byzantine Christian tradition, the Holy Mysteries emphasize healing, transformation, and communion with God, rather than simply ritual or obligation.
The Mysteries of Initiation:
Baptism, Chrismation, and Holy Eucharist are celebrated together, even for infants.
-
Baptism brings new life in Christ.
-
Chrismation (Confirmation) seals the gift of the Holy Spirit.
-
Holy Eucharist nourishes the faithful with the Body and Blood of Christ.
This practice reflects the belief that from the very beginning, a person is fully welcomed into the life of the Church.
The Mystery of Holy Anointing
Through prayer and anointing with oil, this Mystery seeks healing of body and soul. It may be celebrated for those who are ill or in times of spiritual need, emphasizing God’s mercy and care.
The Mystery of Holy Orders
Through ordination, men are called to serve the Church as deacons, priests, and bishops. Their ministry is one of service—offering the Holy Mysteries, teaching the Gospel, and shepherding God’s people.
The Mystery of Repentance
Also called Confession, this Mystery is understood as a moment of spiritual healing and renewal. Through repentance, prayer, and absolution, we are restored to communion with God and the Church.
The Mystery of Marriage
Marriage is a sacred union in which a man and woman are crowned as servants of love and faith. In the Byzantine tradition, the focus is not on vows alone, but on God’s blessing that strengthens the couple to grow in holiness together.
A Life of Grace

The Holy Mysteries are not isolated moments, but part of a lifelong journey of faith. Through them, the Church accompanies the faithful from birth through every stage of life, always pointing toward Christ and the hope of the Resurrection.
If you are interested in receiving or learning more about any of the Holy Mysteries, we warmly invite you to contact the parish.
